CIVIL INITIATIVE
Study Trust is a civil initiative aimed at addressing the problem of poverty in South Africa in a constructive and thorough way through further education and training. The support of the private sector and also of a large number of individual donors from the major communities in the country accounts for the unique character of this people’s endeavour. The beneficiary students are included in this nation-building initiative in which trustees, donors and bursars co-operate, all striving today for a better tomorrow.
LEADERSHIP
Study Trust, over many years, has functioned under the guidance of leaders such as Mr Mike Morapeli, an experienced educationist and Rev Jan Hofmeyr (founder), a youth leader. At the beginning of 2008 Dr Murray Hofmeyr took over the national directorship. He lectured at the University of Venda from 1989 to 2007 where he also led that institution’s Foundation Programme. Study Trust enjoys the benefit of these and other leaders’ knowledge and experience as well as their keen interest in inspiring students towards self-empowerment through further study and training. Two ex-bursars have so far made the Mail & Guardian’s list of people you should have breakfast/lunch with: Thamsanqa Maqubela, executive chairman of Qhubela Holdings and Setlogane Manchidi, head of CSI at Investec. Both are Study Trust trustees.
INCOME TAX BENEFIT
Study Trust is registered as a Public Benefit Organisation in terms of Section 18A of the Income Tax Act No. 58 of 1962 and donations to Study Trust are therefore tax deductible. (SARS reference number: 18/11/13/990.)
SELECTION PROCEDURE
Over the years Study Trust developed a trustworthy and objective computerised selection process. The exceptionally high average annual pass rate is directly related to the selection procedure and the mentorship programme.
SELECTION CRITERIA
The criteria for the selection of bursary holders are mainly academic potential and financial need. Career-oriented study courses, disrupted family circumstances, rural background and gender equality are also taken into account.
PREFERENCE FOR CAREER-ORIENTED STUDY COURSES
In addition to its involvement at high school level, Study Trust gives preference to assisting students pursuing career-oriented courses such as Commerce, Engineering, Education and Agriculture at tertiary educational institutions as well as FET Colleges.
CO-OPERATION WITH THE UNIVERSITY OF JOHANNESBURG
Study Trust, in terms of a partnership agreement with the University of Johannesburg (UJ), has its national head office, since 1975, at the Kingsway campus in Auckland Park, Johannesburg. This is of great benefit to Study Trust.
BOARD OF TRUSTEES
Study Trust is governed by a Board of Trustees, with members from the various communities in the country. The national chairperson is Mr Mike M Morapeli and the vice chairperson is Mr David P Jeftha, an ex-bursar. Nine ex-bursars currently serve on the Board of Trustees.
CONTROL
Payment of bursaries is made mainly to educational institutions on receipt of proof of registration and of satisfactory academic progress.
COST-EFFECTIVE AND EFFICIENT ADMINISTRATION
Study Trust's administration is extremely cost-efficient. In 2007 the percentage of donor funds spent on administration (including salaries) was 10.3%.
RURAL BIAS
Study Trust gives preference to students from rural areas. 55% of the 2008 and 60% of the 2007 bursars hailed from rural areas of the country where the greatest poverty and lack of opportunities for study and work are to be found.
