Career Information Helpline (CIH)

helplineStudietrust in partnership with Investec Bank launched the Career Information Helpline pilot project on 1 August 2008.

With 34 years experience of assisting the studying youth Studietrust identified the gap of a lack of information, often being the first hurdle talented, but poor young people must overcome in their struggle for a brighter future.

Through Investec’s Corporate Social Investment belief, that education is central to securing meaningful change and a better tomorrow, Studietrust has been able to deliver a successful pilot programme that addresses the fundamental questions that create access to education for many young South Africans.

The Career Information Helpline has been operational from 1 August 2008 and young people from all over the country have utilised the facility by calling the toll free number (0800-21-26-41). The helpline can be accessed from Monday to Friday between 08:00 and 16:00 and is toll-free (from landlines).

Some of the questions addressed are as follows:

o    What careers are available to a person with my interests, subject choices and level of academic performance?
o    What qualifications give access to these careers?
o    Which educational institutions offer programmes towards these qualifications?
o    What are the admission requirements for these programmes?
o    What alternative admission routes are available if I do not qualify?
o    Which bursaries and student loans are available for my chosen programme?

The Helpline operator gives information only. Callers seeking advice that requires a more professional intervention are directed to the relevant advice centres.

Investec, is one of Studietrust’s largest private sector partners. Currently 66 commerce, students receive financial support from Investec and mentoring from Investec staff. Since the inception of the Helpline an more learners are applying for appropriate further and tertiary education programmes.
